Online fraud – don’t be a victim

We received an e-mail from a 'Pastor' looking for a bonnet to be shipped to an orphanage in a foreign land. It’s amazing how expensive car parts seem to be over there! As an eCommerce retailer and as a consumer, we have to constantly look out for dishonest folk who are trying to defraud. Luckily for us these ingenious thieves usually use a similar modus operandi. We recently consulted with some of the world’s leading criminal psychologists in order to create a criminal profile of the online fraudster in the hope of solving international internet fraud forever. Here’s what we all came up with:

1.                  The online fraudster will often introduce themselves as members of the clergy, frequently as ‘pastors’. This immediately raises suspicion as the last pastor I ever saw was a travelling pastor who appeared in an episode of ‘Little House on the Prairie’ - and he turned out to be dodgy too.  They can be disguised as priests, bishops, cardinals, preachers, spiritual advisors etc. - so do not be fooled by their wicked deception. I actually feel sorry for legitimate members of the clergy who may be trying to purchase items online, with no success. But at least they will forgive.

2.                  They frequently pretend to work in orphanages or other charitable homes / institutions for the underprivileged. In our case, the Fiat Ducato radiator that they URGENTLY require will often be required for their orphanage bus or the Sat Nav may be essential in guiding hundreds of children from impending poverty. They will often try and give you more money than the advertised product price - for God's sake man save it for the orphanage!

3.                  They often have an existing relationship with a freight or logistics company, so they won’t require you to ship the product as they will make the necessary shipping arrangements. Why would a pastor have so many connections in the logistics trade? Just how much communion are these pastors shipping around the world???

4.                  Their stories may often parallel the plots of Dynasty or Dallas. They will belong to a dysfunctional family which has recently suffered an untimely and suspicious death. They are the sole benefactor of the dead person’s will, but are aware that their siblings are trying to defraud them of their inheritance. They will need your immediate help to transfer the millions of dollars safely out of their country. Don’t be fooled.   Frequently they may require a trustworthy business such as yours in which to transfer vast amounts of money. These figures would be some way believable if they were in the thousands, but when they approaches you with a bank transfer of $30,000,000 you can be fairly confident that something isn’t quite right.

5.                  They will often address you in an over the top manner. They will use expressions such as ‘God Almighty Bless You’, ‘Thousands of Kisses Upon You and Your Wonderful Family’ or some other ridiculous expression of love. For us Irish, not used to expressing emotion until at least 10 pints of porter have been consumed,  this is particularly disconcerting. They will say that they know you are a ‘Trustworthy and Heavenly Person’, although they have never met you. Do not be fooled by their false affection. You can be guaranteed once they get your cash you will receive no Christmas cards from these tricksters.

So there you have it - a fool-proof way to spot cunning thieves who lurk around the internet superhighway trying to rip people off.

Car wind deflectors

Tuesday's tip is how to fit a set of wind deflectors and we've produced a Youtube video to demonstrate how to fit them. Wind deflectors for cars and vans are especially useful for motorists in Ireland and the UK as we get our fair share of rain and wind whilst driving. Having a good set of wind deflectors in your car means that you can drive with the window slightly down, without the rain and wind blowing in on top of you. They also allow you to demist the car, without using the demisters (saving you fuel and money) and overall they allow for a more comfortable driving experience.

Wind deflectors, also referred to as wind visors or sun visors are vehicle-specific, so they are designed in the shape of your window channel. They are generally held in place with metal or plastic clips, or else stuck on by an adhesive strip. A good quality set of car wind deflectors can last for years on a car. Check out our video here to see how they fit and look.

Go the extra mile in customer service

These days retailers need to go the extra mile in terms of customer service. We use an online real-time chat system in order to help our customers out quickly with their queries and it works very well in guiding them around the website and helping them to find the parts they need for their vehicle. Here's an example of the chat in action and some proof that sometimes you should go the extra mile in terms of customer service if you want to win a loyal customer.

Visitor: Riche
Operator: Stuart

Riche: I am looking for rear brake discs for my 2000 vectra 1.8 xe1 and the passenger side front wing as well
* Call accepted by operator Stuart. Currently in room: Riche, Stuart.
Stuart: Can you let me know your reg / license plate number and i will look it up for you?
Riche: 00DXXXX (license number disguised)

Riche: also another question would be. i had my car tracked and the garage said the tracking was fine but the car pulls to the left alot and it would just be the camber of the road as the car vibrates a good bit once go past 100 kmh
Stuart: Discs - http://www.micksgarage.ie/proddetails.aspx?pid=1093253&pk=6216D
Stuart: Wing - http://www.micksgarage.ie/proddetails.aspx?pid=458929&pk=67B92
Stuart: When the car vibrates does the steering wheel shake or does the whole car shake?
Riche: the steering wheel shakes and the vibrations are every like 30 secs
Stuart: The vibration stops and starts even if you stay at 100kph?
Riche: yeah its like smooth then shake a good bit then smooth again
Stuart: I can't explain that Rich, that sounds weird.
Riche: at first i thought the tyres had a twist maybe but the tyre crowd looked at it and it was grand
Stuart: It should be there all the time if it is wheel balance or a buckled wheel
Riche: would that explain the constant pull to the left
Stuart: No, it wouldn't
Stuart: Has the car been up on a ramp at all?

Riche: yeah a few times now
Riche: when it was getting tracked and when the new exhaust was fitted
Riche: i had new drop links fitted too
Stuart: If a mech has been under your car and done a full inspection and still can't tell you what the problem is I do not have much chance sitting at my desk here in Dublin

Riche: ha ha ha ha fair enough i appreciate the help though#
Stuart: No worries
Riche: thanks for giving me the info on those parts ill be gettting them shortly cause you guys have been great for parts so far and ya good for a laugh as well cheers Stuart

MicksGarage Roof Box Range

A brief look at some of our best selling car roofboxes. A car roof box is used for transporting items in your car that you dont have the room to fit in the boot. Roofboxes are most popular with families with young children - with buggies and extra clothes.

Arjes 480

The Arjes 480 was our best selling roof box this year, largely down to the extremely competitive price of €259 for what is a large roof box. The Arjes is an economy roof box, but it has the look of a more expensive box. With a nice black metallic finish and aerodynamic design, it looks really well on the vehicle. The Arjes opens / closes on one side only, so while it is possible to fit this box onto jeeps and MPVs, it is not as suitable for these vehicles as our double-side opening boxes such as the Hapro Carver 6.5 below.

The Arjes is a great option for somebody with a saloon vehicle who is looking for a good size roof box which might be used a couple of times a year.

The Hapro Carver 6.5

The Hapro Carver 6.5 is the real deal in terms of a roof box. It comes with all the features that make it a premium quality roof box. The double-side opening makes it easy to fit on any vehicle, even jeeps and MPVs. It is also very useful when you need to access your items in the roof box and especially if you’re travelling on the continent, as you wont have to be standing out on the roadside when accessing the roof box. It also has an easy fit system which allows you to put it on and off the car in a matter of minutes without any nuts or washers.

The Carver 6.5 is as sturdy a roof box as you can get. The hinges are very strong and it incorporates twin full-length steel reinforcement rails for extra strength. This box comes with a five year warranty and the reason a five year warranty can be offered on this roof box is that things rarely go wrong with them. It’s a good size roof box with 430 litres of space and is very similar in size to the Arjes 480 roof box. It’s a great option for those who will be getting frequent use out of a roof box.

The Hapro Roady 311

The best selling of our smaller roof boxes, The Hapro Roady 311 roof box is a great small roof box ideally suited to hatchback vehicles. At €179 it is actually cheaper than many soft roof boxes on the market. The reason that it is so suitable for hatchback cars is that this box opens from the rear so the hatchback shape means that you can open and close the box easily. It doesn’t have the easy-fit system that the Hapro Carver range comes with, but it is still very easy to fit, with just two clamps on each bar to fit onto the box. This box comes with a two year warranty.

Super Subway

Here at MicksGarage we've always been partial to a good Subway sub. My favourite is the steak & cheese, but some of the others prefer the chicken ranch. In keeping with our 'Free Friday' Facebook and Twitter promotions, Subway just sent us over a metre-long party sub for lunch. Fair play to Subway Main Street Leixlip - what a fresh and tasty sandwich it proved to be!

So it was tools down in the Garage at lunch today as we munched and crunched our way through it - I've never seen a metre long sandwich polished off so fast. It was a testament to the sandwich-making talent of Subway and also the hunger of the MicksGarage crew, who had quite literally starved themselves in anticipation.

Note to other companies: If you want to carry on the spirit of our 'Free Friday' giveaways and send us some free products, don't be shy. We promise to provide honest and impartial reviews.
