Paradise Parking

We're all familiar with barn finds, but what happens when cars don't have barns to protect them? The results look like Peter Lippmann's photographic series, Paradise Parking, in which four-wheeled classics are shown half digested by the relentlessly hungry matron we call Mother Nature. Lippmann's project took two years to put together, and a book of the series will be issued in October. Before that, his photos will be shown at the Gallery Sophie Maree in Amsterdam.

Child Car Seats: Common Mistakes With Shocking Outcomes

The thought of a car crash involving a new born baby is one that would make any parent sick with fear. Infant car seats sold in the UK and Ireland must be manufactured to strict United Nations ECE regulations but fitting a child seat into the car can be undertaken by absolutely anybody. It is estimated that up to 80% of child seats are fitted incorrectly, a figure which will become even more worrying once you watch the videos below

The videos show a series of mock crashes staged by the Transport Research Laboratory for The Observer. Using a dummy, they illustrate – all too graphically – the shocking results of strapping a child into a badly fitted car seat.

In the first test, the seat was fitted correctly; in two subsequent tests it was incorrectly fitted. The fitting mistakes were similar to those seen by road safety officers in checks around the country, including a mis-routed seatbelt, loose harness and seatbelt, and the removal of the child's head support.

The tests simulate a front impact crash at merely 48kph (c30mph)

In the second test, the seatbelt was mis-routed and the head support removed (a mistake one tester had seen a relative make). The harness inside the seat was loosened, as though to make room for a child wearing a coat or snow suit. The seat felt fairly stable when shaken.

The handle was also put back. At the point of impact, the seatbelt retained the seat, but the dummy was thrown forward, putting serious strain on its neck.

For the third test, the seatbelt and harness were slackened further, resulting in more movement after impact, and the dummy eventually being thrown out of the harness and against the backseat.

Marrianne Hynd, who works as an adviser on car seats to the European Commission and represents the UK on working groups for child seat safety, said this would have resulted in head injuries.

She said the slackness of the harness would have prevented the seat spreading the force of the crash over the child's body and reducing injury. "Too much slack in the harness means that the child will be caught later in the crash, because the harness doesn't have time to absorb the energy," she said. In some cases, it can even result in the child being ejected.

Hynd added that, in a real crash, the car would pitch forward and that movement could be enough to send the car seat into the footwell.

Anyone concerned about their car seat should contact their council's road safety department to see if they offer fitting checks, or visit our website for details of where to get more information.

The TRL is running a ratings system for seats which factors in how easy the seats are to install. So far, only three manufacturers have put seats forward to be rated.

Growler Resurfaces As Lyonheart

About a year ago the Growler E by Swedish Designer Bo Zolland broke cover. If memory serves me correctly it was even featured on Top Gear. The Growler was a beautifully rendered but ridiculously named homage to the Jaguar E Type but with modern underpinnings and a hi tech composite body. For whatever reason (probably the stupid name and the 1/2 million quid price tag) the design never made it to production but it has now resurfaced under a new and equally dubious moniker: the Lyonheart! Behold!!

Chris Harris Drives An F1 Car

I just stumbled across this series of videos whilst looking at some stuff from the excellent Chris Harris On Cars Series on YouTube. Chris Harris is a Journalist, racer and road tester for Evo Magazine. This series of videos is pretty old now, hence the poor quality but more than any other footage i've seen of journo's and celebs getting strapped into F1 cars it gives a proper sensation of just how incredibly savage the performance of these cars is and how difficult they are to drive. Bearing in mind Chris Harris is a fairly accomplished racing driver and spends his days testing the likes of Pagani Zondas and Ferrari 458's he still manages to spin the thing twice.

The videos are quite long but well worth watching if you have some time on your hands. There's excellent insight and comment from Martin Brundle throughout as well. The actual driving starts at the end of the 1st video if you want to jump straight to it.

Free Friday Winner - February 17th, 2012

This week we decided to do something different and turn the tables on you guys on our classic - 'Guess the Car' and let you test our knowledge. We asked you to post your crytpic snaps for us to decipher, and you gave us some beauties! The office was full of debate, argument and almost brawls guessing them but for the most part we got them all - however the one that caused the most debate, and caught us out the most was:

Jonathan Scales

with an image of BMW 1800 indicators that we were convinced were off a 2002. But after checking up part numbers we admitted defeat.

Well done Jonathan it was a tough one! Could you please email your details to stuart@micksgarage.ie and we'll have your jacket sent out to you next week.

As for ourselves, well we need to spend the weekend brushing up on our abstract automotive photo deciphering abilites! Thanks to all of you who entered....Have a great weekend, we'll be back next week for some more shenanigans!

Profile: Stephen Brooks: VIDEO

When I started writing this blog I was just going post the latest video from Stephen Brooks, but after i'd re-visited his Vimeo page I thought i'd turn it into a mini feature. If you haven't seen any of his films then you're missing out. Stephen Brooks is one of the most talented amature film makers i've come across and is responsible for some of the most fantastically filmed and edited Drifting and Car Culture videos of recent years. He has a an amazing ability to match the action in the visual to the events in the audio track, something which is by no means easy.
The first video we're going to show you is a short showcase of some of Stephens work from 2011 which includes excerps from the various events and photoshoots from last year:

SHOWREEL MMXI | THE WARNING from Stephen Brooks FILMS on Vimeo.

The 2nd video is titled Players, which is one of the largest car shows of its kind in the UK. Brilliant panning camera shots and such imaginitive audio/visual editing make this static display literally jump off the screen:

PLAYERS 5.0 from Stephen Brooks FILMS on Vimeo.

Still my personal favourite video and one i've posted here in the past. The whole drifting scene really isn't my thing but you've gotta love the 600bhp + cars. Check out 2:52 onwards is it just fluke that the rear wheels on this black and orange S15 Silvia are locking perfectly in time with the music? I doubt it. (yes i know i'm a geek!) This video rocks!

AWESOMEFEST 2011 : THE FILM from Stephen Brooks FILMS on Vimeo.

6 Days is a video review of the Maxxis Tyres British Drift Championship:

SIX | DAYS from Stephen Brooks FILMS on Vimeo.

Not all Stephens films are related to car culture, this one makes it into our list because, 1. it's very cool and 2. well two wheels are nearly as good as four
